How To Help Save Trapped Pets

A hundred years from now, it will not matter the sort of house I lived in, what my bank account was, or the car I drove......but the world may be different because I was important in the life of animals and the creatures on this earth.

This community service site is dedicated to helping save the lives of trapped pets in the backyards of Australia

Without our help and intervention, many animals die each year.

One phone call is all it costs to save them.

Help!

How Pets Get Trapped in Abandoned Houses and Backyard Sheds

This especially applies to cats, who are inquisitive creatures and easily jump fences into other people’s backyards.

They go inside a building or shed through a window or door. A gust of wind, or a person, inadvertently shuts the window or door, and the animal is now trapped. Without human intervention, the animal will die.

What To Do If You Hear Plaintive Miaowing or Barking In Your Neighbourhood

If you suspect that an animal is trapped :

1. Establish the location of the distressed animal.

2. If it is in a frontyard or some place publicly accessible, good, save the animal. If it is inside a house or in the backyard, knock on the door of the house or contact the owner of the property to let them know they have a trapped pet on their premises. DO NOT enter the house or backyard yourself. TRESPASSING is against the law, and you may be charged (yes, I know this is for a good cause, however there is no law that makes an exception for this situation). There is also the issue of the property getting damaged, or you getting injured.

3. If you can’t save the animal on your own, then contact your local council. Each council has a Duty Ranger who has the legal power to enter properties. The Duty Ranger will go out and do whatever is necessary to save the pet. If it is out of business hours, the council switchboard will put you through to an emergency phone number. How You Can Do Your Bit to Prevent Pets Getting Trapped

A little vigilance is all that is required...

Check there are no pets in your shed or garage before you leave it.

Always shut the door after checking, and ensure it is closed tightly.

If there is a window, make sure it is either closed, or cannot be closed inadvertently.

Tell others about this website, or about the Duty Ranger at local councils.

Cat

This website came about because a cat died in an inaccessible shed in my neighbourhood. The RSPCA website said I should contact my local police station for help. The police did come out to the property, however, the property had high fences all around it because it is a development site. And the police did not bother to enter the backyard. Numerous pleas to government departments to have the trespassing laws amended have hardly even been replied to.

Weeks later, I was advised by the local member of parliament’s office that the local council’s Duty Ranger was the person I should have contacted, if I had known.

So if you are in a similar situation, please phone your council.

And I truly hope that if your pet is trapped somewhere, this website may help save it.
